Machiya (Traditional Wooden Town Houses) - Kyoto
• First 3 nights we stay in a traditional Machiya or wooden town house; a unique experience we have designed for this tour to Japan.
Not something many foreign travelers have the opportunity to do as this accommodation is highly prized by local tourists who book a long way in advance.
A great experience. These Machiya are traditional dwellings, warehouses and merchant abodes that have been tastefully renovated and fitted with many modern facilities to suit guests.
Machiya are mostly shared accommodation facilities. Sleeping arrangements for 2 persons per room are on futons with Tatami mats prepared and laid out for you in your room . The futons are very warm and comfortable to sleep in. Usually 2 person per room.
Our preferred Machiyas overlook the Kamo river with views to the mountains, heated lounges, interior and exterior decks, a full working kitchens, located in the Pontocho district of inner Kyoto close to our Luxury Hotel.

This area was first built up around 1712, initially for inns and rooms for boatman and their passengers. In 1859 it became famous
(or in-famous) as a red-light district, along with the Gion area on the opposite river bank.
